What To Do In A Dental Emergency

  • Call Knight Pediatric Dentistry right away. It is critical to see a dentist as soon as possible after your child experiences a dental emergency. This helps ensure that a damaged tooth can be saved and that further complications are prevented.
  • If your child has a knocked-out tooth or pulled-out piece of dental work, bring it with you to your emergency appointment. Grab a knocked-out tooth by its crown, and put it in a small container of cold milk. A pulled-out piece of dental work (a filling or a crown) can be kept in a plastic bag.

  • Sterile gauze or clean cotton balls can be used to absorb blood, which should mostly slow within an hour. An over-the-counter medicine like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help with discomfort. You can also apply an ice pack to your child’s cheek for 10 minutes at a time to help with swelling and pain.
  • Come into Knight Pediatric Dentistry ASAP. Some issues, like a knocked-out tooth, must be treated within 1-2 hours for the best results.

FAQs

What Counts As A Dental Emergency?

At our office, we consider any dental emergency to be any condition that is causing serious oral pain or bleeding, that you cannot treat on your own. This means that a wide variety of conditions count as dental emergencies. Issues like oral injuries, pulled-out dental work, serious toothaches, and even food or debris stuck between the teeth can count as an emergency. Even if you’re not sure that your child’s condition is an emergency, give us a call to discuss symptoms! When it comes to your child’s oral health, it’s better to be safe than sorry.
