The Benefits Of Sedation Dentistry

  • Sedation dentistry helps your child relax during their treatment. Dental anxiety is common in children, particularly if your child is having a dental treatment like a filling or tooth extraction. Sedation helps relieve their fear and anxiety and keeps them feeling safe and comfortable.
  • Our sedation options are also a good choice to help your child stay still during their appointment, allowing Dr. Knight to work more quickly and effectively. This is particularly beneficial during longer procedures, or if your child needs multiple dental treatments.
  • Sedation can help with the fear of needles, which can be problematic during the numbing process.
  • With sedation, your child’s gag reflex will be suppressed, which makes it easier for Dr. Knight to treat your child’s rear teeth.

Laughing Gas

This method of sedation uses a nose mask to deliver laughing gas and oxygen into your child’s lungs. The laughing gas will make them feel happy and euphoric, and also helps minimize pain and discomfort. It only lasts about 5 minutes after treatment, so you won’t have to worry about any long-term grogginess or side effects.

IV Sedation & General Anesthesia

IV sedation uses a strong anti-anxiety medication which is delivered into your child’s vein using an IV. Typically, IV sedation will result in your child falling asleep throughout their entire procedure, so it’s a good option for kids who will be undergoing extensive treatment, or patients who are very nervous about coming to the dentist.

It’s important to distinguish IV sedation from general anesthesia. IV sedation results in a state of deep sleep. General anesthesia, on the other hand, is characterised by unconsciousness. This means that general anesthesia requires a ventilator to assist with your child’s breathing. General anesthesia is typically only for special cases.
